Balance Due

So here we go back to the light
Burning atoms down to midnight
Laid to waste in a wasted land
But I've seen something rough in you
The way a beggar's eyes turn cool
When the money falls into his hand
Some things are better left unsaid
War stories stolen from your bed
Running up a flagship debt and a balance due

We stepped through the door into the night
Tilting glasses left and right
Then a soft toss on the outfield grass
And later we stood behind the door
With all our unsettled scores
On a tightrope
Stretching from a jealous past
It was all I could do to bring you back
Tearing up the older tracks
Feeding quarters as the balance goes to red from black

I wish I could turn the battle round
Righting wrongs that are always found
Along the need to know you more
But some things are better left unsaid
Like you're always in my head
Or a promise I was never good for
And I could never explain to you
That anything less than true
Was just another lie
So we'll add it to the balance due

So here we go back to the light
Burning atoms down to midnight
Laid to waste in a wasted land
Where some things are better left unsaid
War stories bleached and bled
Running up a flagship debt
So we'll add it to the balance due
